Borders and Coastguard agency managers qualify with the chartered management institute

Deputy Chief Minister, the Hon Dr Joseph Garcia, has presented certificates to three managers at the Border and Coastguard Agency, James Hernandez, Joseph Molinari and Stephen Perez, who have successfully completed the Chartered Management Institute Level 5 qualification over the last year.

The qualification is designed for managers as well as those aspiring to senior management and to Chartered Manager status. It aims to develop key skills such as managing resources, recruitment and information management.

The qualification provides a broad knowledge of management skills while focusing on the specific leadership areas appropriate to the individual and the workplace. It strengthens and develops the individual’s knowledge of management by focusing on specific management areas that are applicable to his/her job.

This is part of an ongoing plan established as a result of a review of agency’s operations at the airport, frontier and the port. This review highlighted a number of areas which had been inherited by the Agency, and which are being positively addressed in order to achieve a more professional, engaged and focused operation.

The review also highlighted the need for professional development, training and, in particular, management development. This Government continues to be firmly committed to providing opportunities for professional development for all staff and as such is supporting the Agency in its effort to address this issue. In addition, the agency has already started the process towards Investors in People recognition whilst managers at more junior levels are also working towards Chartered Management Institute professional development qualifications.

We continue to recognise the importance of training and development at all levels and, in particular, the achievement of professional qualifications.

Today’s awards are the culmination of Phase One of a longer term plan to continue to raise the professional standards of the agency which will enable us to improve even further the service we provide to Gibraltar” said Andrew Bonfante, the Chief Executive of the Borders and Coastguard Agency.
